Brands using the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) can register or claim their custom username directly through the Meta ecosystem using WhatsApp Manager or Meta Business Suite.

Here is exactly how to navigate the system to secure your brand's handle:

How to Claim Your Username via WhatsApp Manager
  1. Log in to the Meta Business Suite and navigate to your business portfolio.
  2. Click on All Tools (the hamburger icon) and select WhatsApp Manager.
  3. Under the Accounts menu on the left, click on Phone Numbers.
  4. Locate the specific phone number you want to assign the username to (note: each username is tied one-to-one with a unique phone number).
  5. Click the Settings (gear icon) next to that phone number and choose Profile.
  6. Look for the Username field and click Create username or Claim reserved username.
  7. Enter your desired handle and click Save.


Crucial Username Rules for Brands
To ensure your registration request is approved by Meta, your username must adhere to these structural constraints:
  • Format: Must be between 3 to 35 characters and can only contain lowercase English letters (a-z), digits (0-9), periods (.), and underscores (_).
  • Exclusions: Non-English accents/characters (e.g., ñ, é) are strictly prohibited. The handle cannot start with "www." or end with standard domain extensions (e.g., .com, .net, .org) to prevent fraud.
  • Matching Rules: If Meta has automatically reserved a handle for you based on your Meta-Verified name, Official Business Account (OBA) name, or existing Facebook/Instagram pages, you must link your WhatsApp number to those pages in your Account Center first to successfully claim it.


Note: 
1) While customer usernames hide their personal phone numbers, business usernames do not hide your phone number. Your registered business number remains fully visible on your corporate profile to maintain open trust and brand compliance.

2) Currently Business can only Claim their Business username, but same will activate once META enable for all business.
